Inhalt: Are you interested in medieval calligraphy? Have you ever wondered what life was like for the super-rich in medieval England? Are you curious what medieval ?haute cuisine? might have tasted like? Then this course is for you! In this course, you will learn to read recipes from a cookbook written in the late 14th century, documenting what was eaten at the royal court of king Richard II.
The book was written by hand in a style of calligraphy called Anglicana, which is related to Gothic scripts, such as Gothic littera bastarda. The language is Middle English, but the grammar is very simple. Step by step, I will guide you through everything you need to know to be able to read the text, from the letters and the abbreviations used to the vocabulary we will find. The moment when the more than 600-year-old writing suddenly gives away its secrets is absolutely magical!
The course will be taught in English, but, if necessary, I can explain things in German.
